Bad Luck Haunts Shorthanded Winnipeg

What could go wrong for WSA Winnipeg, did as they dropped a pair of matches in Des Moines against the Menace. Losing 7-0 Friday and 9-0 Saturday.

Winnipeg came into the double header missing a few key players for a range of reasons including Tom Prazak, Kyle Hiebert and Ali Musse. Despite the absences Winnipeg did bring a full roster to Iowa with several younger players called up from the reserve team.

Moses Danto joined the team fresh off his trial with Major League Soccer side Sporting Kansas City. He would rest up Friday and start Saturday in his return from Kansas.

On Friday, Menace captain Leigh Veidman led the way with 4 goals in the match. Winnipeg put in a solid effort and kept things close for the first half, but the ground came out from under them after Cello Ndanji was ejected for a second yellow. Winnipeg played the entire second half down a man.

Saturday it was the same story, good effort, but misfortune made the game a steep hill. Early on, with the score 0-0, goalkeeper Evan Barker collided with a Des Moines player, the injury took him out of the game at the half with the score only 2-0 for Des Moines. With regular ‘keeper Josh Partaker unable to get the the game on time, Winnipeg looked further down the depth chart to Kevin Garic. Garic would be forced into his first PDL game in net with little time to prepare.

Without Barker, who has been solid in his rookie campaign, Winnipeg gave up 7 goals in the second half. Adding to the problems was the loss of midfielder Jash Sangha, who took WSA down to 10 men to get stitches following an elbow to the face from an opposing player.  At one point Winnipeg had only 9 players on the field when Tobias Krueger and went down hurt in the dying minutes.

“We can only worry about what we can control.” Said WSA Winnipeg head coach Eduardo Badescu. “We are proud of the effort put forward but between injuries and playing shorthanded, it was always going to be tough.

WSA Winnipeg gets a well needed layoff before their final two matches of the season. Not playing until July 14th when they host St. Louis.

“Everybody should be back and we will go for another win at home.”
