WSA’s Lafreniere Represents Canada at World University Games

Former University of Manitoba Bison women’s soccer team captain, Julie Lafreniere has been a WSA North Stars player for the past two seasons. In 2012 she played the early part of the season with WSA before leaving the team to finish her Bison commitments.  Julie is a strong player and a mainstay in our successful Ottawa Fury games in the spring trip of 2012.

Julie is an outside defensive back with explosive speed.  She will often join the attack in the offensive zone, but her quickness allows her to get back to defend once the ball has turned over.

In the spring of 2013, Julie was selected to Team Canada for games in Kazan, Russia at the 2013 Summer Universiade. Pre-tournament exhibition games provided for travel in a number of European countries, and some excellent soccer even before getting to the games in Russia. Julie said, “The experience is amazing. I’ve had the chance to play. I’m in every game and started 2 of the 3 so far. And the athlete village is amazing here.” Canada finished in 10th place with a 3 wins and 3 losses record in the tournament.

We were very fortunate to have Julie with our North Stars squad up until the end of June when she left for the Russian games. She is an amazing soccer talent and a quality leader and teammate.  Julie has now left the Winnipeg to further her education Chicago. We look forward to her playing with us in the future, whenever she is back in Winnipeg and available to play.
