A young and shorthanded WSA Winnipeg side fell 4-0 to St.Louis in the first game of the new Premier Development League season.
A hard fought effort saw the WSA defence hold strong and surrender just a single goal in the first half. Several attempts on goal went unfinished for Winnipeg despite several moments of pressure throughout. Jeff Tryon scored the Lions goal in the 35th minute.
The second half saw St.Louis turn to fresh legs that made it much tougher on Winnipeg. With only 3 substitutes available for the game, and only two of them outfield players, fatigue started to show in the final stretch of the game.
St.Louis put up 3 goals in the second half, all coming in the final half hour (Bentlinger ’68, Cojocov ’80 and ’86).
“I was happy with our first half and full credit to our players as they took on a team much older and experienced than us.” WSA coach Eduardo Badescu said,”We didn’t finish our quality chances and because of that the score doesn’t show how close it was.”
Several players made their debuts for Winnipeg Sunday night and the team was without several key players. Moses Danto, Ivan Borka and Raphael Ohin were among the many players that did not make the trip to St. Louis.
Following the loss WSA Winnipeg heads to Kokomo, Indiana to take on the expansion Mantis Monday night. Kokomo beat St.Louis 2-0 in their first game of the season.
After Monday Winnipeg continues a season opening roadtrip with a stop in Chicago to take on the Fire’s U-23 PDL side.
