WSA Winnipeg held strong and took down the powerful Chicago Fire Premier in a 1-0 victory for their first win of the season. The win also ends a 5 game winning streak for the Fire, the top ranked team in the Heartland division. William Brown scored the winning goal for Winnipeg.
A day after a 2-0 loss to the same Chicago team, Winnipeg took the game to the visitors and the backline held strong for a 0-0 draw at the half. Josh Partaker continued his strong season in goal, complemented by yet another solid game from the centre-back pairing of Kyle Hiebert and Tom Prazak to keep the Fire forwards shutout.
Youngster William Brown scored the eventual game winner in the 72nd minute. The Shattuck-St.Mary’s product was making his debut in the match.
From there Winnipeg showed composure and stamina to hold off any late opportunities Chicago tried to create. The Wolf Pack have improved their defensive play with every passing game and showed it on Sunday. After allowing 13 goals in their first 3 matches, they have gave up just 4 in their last 3 contests.
“It would be easy to get down on yourself after a rough start to the season but instead used it as motivation.” Said WSA Head Coach Eduardo Badescu.”We have been due for a win in these last few games and finally got it done tonight.”
It will be a short celebration following WSA’s first victory since the 2014 season. Winnipeg wraps up a 5 game homestand on Tuesday against the Des Moines Menace at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex (Winnipeg Soccer Centre). Kick off is 7 p.m.
